"Free" email services and anti-spam companies add ads to your outgoing email! Posted by webtop admin on Friday, September 20, 2002 - 09:37 AM PDT (101 Reads)
webtop admin writes "Do you enjoy having all of your outgoing email become advertisements for others? An article on news.com reports that "Free Web-based e-mail services have long used customers as marketing mules, adding an unobtrusive tag line at the end of each message to tout their products. Now, an anti-spam company is drawing fire for using the same tactic. Ads, called "spamlets" by one privacy expert, have begun appearing in the signature files typically used to place personal information, such as a name, telephone number and custom greeting, at the bottom of e-mail messages. Some software downloads now include code that inserts a marketing message in this signature file. Once triggered, all e-mail from that address will carry the promotional text." When you own your own web-based email system - such as the Webtop - you don't have to worry about issues like this at all. The Webtop gives your private, secure, web-based email that you run on your own computer using your own hard drive to store as much email as you want."

HotMail not as safe you think! Posted by webtop admin on Thursday, August 29, 2002 - 06:50 AM PDT (149 Reads)
webtop admin writes "MSNBC has published a story here about how a company has produced software to allow employers to spy on the email you send and receive through HotMail. This is another sad example of your privacy and security being compromised by your employer. However, running the Webtop on your OWN computer at home (with an SSL enabled web server), can be a very secure messaging system."

Hotmail is deleting your email! Posted by webtop admin on Friday, July 26, 2002 - 05:34 AM PDT (168 Reads)
webtop admin writes "News.com is carrying this article about Hotmail deleting emails that are 30 days old. Along with privacy and security concerns with these "free" email providers, it seems that you now have to worry about them deleting emails you thought were safe. Obviously, with a system like the Webtop, this isn't an issue. All of your email is stored safely on your own system and accessible through the web."
